Perc
& Mantles
Soil test
pits or soil
mantles are excavations done with a backhoe to measure
the effectiveness of soil to filter sewage through leach lines. Usually
one or more backhoe pits are dug, from 6 to 8 feet deep, and observed by
a civil engineer, geologist or environmental health specialist. The soil
can't have ground water or shallow bed rock, and should be able to absorb
and filter water all the way down. |

A perc
(percolation) test is used to determine how fast or slow the ground absorbs
water. They are usually run by one of the above mentioned professionals
by measuring the drop of water in a post hole over time. A perc hole is
dug to the anticipated trench bottom or to the limiting horizon. The hole
is pre-soaked to simulate winter time or wet weather conditions. Readings
of how quickly water leaves this hole are taken the following day. These
reading are then averaged to calculate your average percolation rate. |
